Speed & Elevation Profile Kunzelsau Nuremburg |
My great grandmother was actually born in Ingelfingen although she lived in kunzelsau before moving to Jarrow and on my last visit to Kunzelsau we actually stayed in a guest house in Inglefingen so before heading off East again to Nuremburg I actually cycled West to visit Ingelfingen again.
I looked for the cyclepath but couldnt find it so I cycled across the Bridge and along the road on the other side of the Kocher and soon I had reached Ingelfingen but rather than a little picturesque village it was an ugly town with concrete silos and factory units - I couldn't even find the pretty guest house which was the first building going into town last time I was there.
Anyway I remembered a road set behind the main road which lead to the Old part of town so I stopped and cut through some car parks and found the other road. Instead of going left into town I turned right and back tracking i found the guesthouse which was completely unchanged but there was now also another across the road which seemed to be run by the owners son ... obviously a paying business !!
I took some pics around town and manaaged to find a perfect cycle path back to Kunzelsau following the Kocher.
Once in town I followed my route which took me up the hill on the north bank of the river - the road was steep and it just got steeper & steeper to the point where after half a mile I just couldn't turn the pedals - I got off on what was now a wet slippy path and I even found it very very hard to push the bike up the path - the gradient must have been closing in on 1 in 3 - another 400 yards & I reached a more level road and I was off.
The road levelled out and I cycled through quiet roads then just before Eberbach I lost all my gained elevatio in a fast descent which took me down to the river Jagst at Eberbach.
I was to suffer for the descent - I followed the river for no more than half a mile then turned left and climbed out of the Jagst Valley along the road to Simmetshausen - the road started to gently rise then it forked - from experience stayed on the road as the fork looked like a farm road - the roads run parallel and afte i climbed about 50feet it became apparent my route was on the other road. Well I wasnt going to go back down the hill to risk what looked like a farm track. The road continued to rise at about a 10% gradient ... for 600 more feet and all within a mile.
It then levelled out and I tracked east across small roads and eventually found my route near Schrozberg - the road was now very level and fast - the weather threatened rain but it never came and the wind was mainly behind - excellennt !
I passed a sign for a town called Funkstatt and well that was it - the next 10 miles all I could do was hum away to the Lipps Inc hit - Funky Town. won't you take me to !!!
10 miles later and I could see Rothenburg ob der Tauber which is a medieval hill city - a very fast downhill descent to the Tauber followed and I paused at the bridge over the river - there was a curious looking Donkey on the parapet which I photographed. I was to pay for the descent as the Hill town now lay up a rather steep hill, I continued to take pictures and eventually entered the old town through a stone towered gate and a long uphill street of multicoloured buildings lead up to a large square surrounded by big stone buildings and city walls.
I paused in the square and bought some fresh fruit from a market stall to quench the thirst and increase the energy levels. I left the square via a pretty gateway again but on this side of town the land was flat and I was now cycling through lovely countryside - I spotted a great looking golf course below a castle in the town of Colmberg and wished I had my clubs !
Then as I turned a corner and arrived in the village of Obersulzbach I saw ... well what was it ? - Well ? It certainly was Big , VERY BIG, In fact THE BIGGEST one I'd ever seen - in fact the only one I'd ever seen and I still don't know what it is for. But what it was was a huge tree hewn from the nearby forests - a huge straight tree, the type that go straight up with few branches near the bottom and it had been dressed with blue & white ribbon and there were badges or crests on it - and it had two large hoops hanging from it ... and it had what looked like a 6 foot Christmas tree on the top which was actually the top of the tree. It was magnificent and I hoped the next Village would have a bigger one ... I was disappointed !
I continued across undulating countryside with the odd nasty climb until I reached a small village called Rugland which marked the last climb and final 24 miles would be mainly downhill dropping over 500 feet.
Eventually I reached Oberasbach and Zirndorf and I was on the outskirts of Nuremburg and homing in on my hotel for the night just near the Train Station.
